Much as I would have loved to see my grandson’s eyes as he opened the package, I knew Elmo would not be an appropriate carry-on for an airline, so it preceded my visit by several days. But I am pleased to report that his enjoyment had not waned one bit by the time Grandma arrived.
First, this is a wonderfully constructed toy. I expect it to be in full working order by the time Grandson Number Two has reached toddler-hood. From my experience, that is rare indeed.
Second, this is not your ordinary push-a-button gadget with a limited range of noise and repetitive motion. Elmo really performs! The complexity in sound and action is nothing short of amazing! So, Parents, be warned: Do not throw away the instructions! By that I don’t mean it is beyond the range of a small child’s ability to operate it, but it is also not that intuitive in learning its finer points on one’s own.
While I prefer a more constructive type of toy, this particular toy exceeded my expectations in its overall quality. In addition, it also encourages some active participation.

We picked this out with our 2 year old in mind. She has two brothers, ages 5 and 6. The best thing I can say about this toy is that they all play with it. I was definitely not anticipating that! What sets this apart is that the older boys pick up on the songs (or know them already) really quickly, so there is no competition. They play WITH her rather than trying to take it from her or get her to “leave them alone,” etc. It was her brothers, and not me, who finally showed her she could let go of Elmo’s hands and he would still bang his drums and clap on his tambourine. She prances around with that microphone like she’s LIVE and IN CONCERT! While the toy itself is a little loud, it’s definitely not as annoying as some other toys because it’s not as repetitive. There are six songs, but maybe it’s because they sing more than the same 3 lines that it doesn’t bother me as much as most of her other musical / singing toys. Overall, I think the Let’s Rock Elmo is super fun, a bit loud, and pretty low on the parental irritation scale. It’s been 3 days now, and she has played with it every day without playing with it ALL day, so I think it’s a toy she will continue to enjoy, as well.
